At NCC, we are constantly trying to help you develop your relationship with God, to take your next step. In light of that, I’d love to share a tool that will help you in your spiritual disciplines, specifically with Bible reading and prayer.
That tool is soap.
Soap is an acronym that stands for scripture, observation, application, and prayer, and the way soap works is simple!
Find a verse using any devotional, Bible reading plan, or verse of the day. You can even just flip your Bible open and read the text your eyes land on. So using your SOAP form, the online version, or any notebook or journal, write the letter S.
The S stands for Scripture. Take a moment and write out the verse in the S section. If it is a passage, find a verse that stands out to you and cop that one down. Not only will this help you focus more on the verse, it will help you remember it as well.
Next, write O – The O stands for observation. What do you see in the verse that you’re reading? Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? Did God speak as you read it? How does it land in your heart? Write down what you see in the verse, what you observe in the scripture. Be sure to give God time to show you something in the verse as well.
Next write A – The A stands for Application. This is when God’s Word becomes personal. What is the Holy Spirit saying to you today? How can you apply what you just read to your own personal life? What changes do you need to make? Is there an action that you need to take? If there is an action, make it SMART goal: SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and within a time frame.
Lastly write P – The P stands for Prayer. Pray God’s Word back to Him. If He has revealed something to you during this time in His Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Pray that the Holy Spirit would help you apply what you’ve learned. If there is an action you need to take, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you change what you need to change.
Studying God’s Word like this can take as little or as long as you have time to give. Some days it can take just a few minutes, other days longer. Give it a month and you’ll see a huge difference in your relationship with God and his word! If you get stuck or need help, just text or email! We’re happy to help you. But most importantly, find something that you can use to help get you to the next level in your prayer and Bible study, whether that is SOAP or not. We believe soap can help do that! We hope you enjoy using SOAP.
