Faith Works Study Guide

Faith Works Study Guide

“Good works do not make a good man, but a good man does good works.” – Martin Luther

Monday:
Ephesians 2:8-10
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (NKJV)

  • According to verse 8, how are we saved?
    • According to verse 10, what are we created in Christ to do?
      • What is the relationship then between faith and works being described here?
  • What do you think it means that we are God’s “workmanship”?
  • This passage tells us that God prepared beforehand things for you to accomplish with your life. This means that God had a purpose for your life, and then He made you for that purpose, not the other way around. How do you think this should affect the way we see ourselves?
    • How should this affect the way we plan out our lives?

Tuesday:
2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. (NKJV)

  • What does this verse tell us about God’s provision?
    • According to this verse, what is the purpose of God providing for us in this way?
  • Have you ever felt God was nudging you to do something for others, but you felt like you didn’t have the means, or the ability, or the skill to do so?
    • How do you think this verse addresses that thought?
      • How do you think our faith comes in to play in situations like this?

Wednesday:
Ephesians 5:15-16
15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (NKJV)

  • What do you think it means to live “circumspectly”?
    • According to verse 16, why are we told to live this way?
      • In what ways do you see that the days are evil in the time that we live?
  • What do you think Paul meant when he encouraged us to be “redeeming the time”?
    • What do you think are some regular, practical (daily, weekly, or monthly) things that you can do to make sure you are “redeeming the time” that you have been given?

Thursday:
John 14:12-14
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. (NKJV)

  • What does Jesus tell us here about the works that we can do?
    • According to verse 12, these great works will be done by those who do what?
  • In verses 13-14, what does Jesus explain to us about the power of prayer?
    • What do you think it means to ask in His name?
      • Do you think it just means saying His name at the end of your prayers?
  • Take a minute to think about the kind of prayers you pray on a regular basis over your own life and those around you. Based on what Jesus said in this passage, do you think you need to re-examine the prayers you are praying?
    • Why or why not?

Friday:
Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (NKJV)

  • How does Jesus describe believers in verse 14?
    • According to verse 16, what is the purpose of being light to the world?
  • Practically, what do you think it means to “let your light so shine before men?”
    • In what ways do you think you are “letting your light shine”?
  • Take a few minutes to pray and ask the Lord to forgive you if you have been hiding your light in any way. Ask Him to give you a greater love for the people around you and a boldness to let your light shine brighter. Pray and think about ways that you can intentionally shine your light to those who need it in your world.
