Examine the evidence

“for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10

Jesus made it clear that many are lost, and the Bible describes many of the conditions we can identify in a person who is lost.   Below are some key indicators to warn us that we may be in fact in a lost condition.

The State of the Lost

1. No peace

“There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked.” Isa 48:22

No matter how much we try to calm our outward circumstances, there is a lack of peace until we know the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).

2. No interest in church

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 1 John 3:14

While it is not true that everyone who attends church is saved, it is pretty certain that people who have no interest in church do not know the Head of the church, Jesus Christ.  Someone who is spiritually alive desires to grow, just like a person who is physically alive desires to eat, drink, breathe, and be around other people.

3. No real sense of direction in life

he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. John 12:35

having no hope and without God in the world. Eph 2:12

Jesus is “the Light of the World” (John 1:9; 8:12).  How can we feel secure about our future unless we’re following Him?

4. Reaching poor conclusions

21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Rom 1:21-23

Today we can look at the idols of ancient civilizations, like Rome and Greece, or the Incas and the Mayans, and wonder how they could have been so foolish as to worship idols.  Yet look at what people today substitute for God – nature, other people, money, poor relationships, the esteem of other unbelievers, pleasure, and many other ‘natural’ substitutes for a spiritual reality.

5. Spiritually dead

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, Eph 2:1

This is why unbelievers many times express no interest in the things of God – they are literally separated (the true meaning of death) from Him and His life.  They are not really aware of Him, do not feel His Presence, nor hear His voice.

6. Morally and spiritually defiled

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.  Gal 5:19-22

This is the main reason God cannot let a lost person into heaven.  He cannot let it be defiled.

But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.  Revelation 21:27

By contrast, we should be able to see the opposite in true believers – peace, purpose, spiritually alive, freedom from defiling practices, and a desire to worship God with other believers.
